Take the story of U.S. Marine Roger Rua. Roger received a significant spinal cord injury while serving on patrol in Afghanistan. He had to completely re-learn how to walk after being paralyzed from the waist down. Still, while he has regained his mobility, the experience left him with debilitating anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, and lingering physical effects. Sadly, an all-too-familiar story.

Dixon, Roger’s service dog, is trained to help with Roger’s PTSD symptoms and retrieve items Roger can’t reach when his spinal injury flares up. The loving help Dixon provides allows Roger to live a productive, happy life, all while creating a bond between the two that will last forever.

Canine Companions for Independence provides all service dogs free of charge, and they rely on our donations for support.
