Why Should Young Adults Consider Life Insurance?

Young Athlete

When’s the best time to purchase life insurance? The answer is NOW. If you find yourself thinking you’re too young to purchase life insurance, we urge you to stop and keep reading as we debunk other common life insurance myths with an assist from “Life Happens.”

It’s too expensive. In the ever-burgeoning budget of a young family, things like day care and car payments and possibly student loans eat up a good chunk of the money each month, and a lot of people think that life insurance is just outside those “necessities” when money’s tight. Life insurance is often not nearly as expensive as you might think, especially when you can get a good policy for less than the cost of a daily cup of coffee at the local café, and well, if money’s tight now, what if something happens to you? In other words, you cannot afford NOT to have life insurance.

I’m strong and healthy! You eat right, you stay active, and everyone admires how grounded and centered you are. You passed your last physical with flying colors! That’s GREAT! You’re neither immortal nor indestructible. It’s not even that something could happen to you—though it could—so much as when you’re at your strongest and healthiest, there’s no better time to get a policy to protect your loved ones. If you fall seriously ill or suffer significant injury later, it will make it tougher to get that kind of policy, if any at all. Simply put, purchase it now while you are healthy and it’s less expensive, so that it’s there for you and your family when cost/availability is out of reach in your mature years.

I don’t have kids. Kids are a big reason why some people get life insurance. That’s not the only litmus for needing protection. If there is anyone in your life who would suffer financially from your loss—your spouse or domestic partner, a sibling, even your parents—a life insurance policy goes a long way in making sure everyone’s still OK even if something happens to you. For peace of mind, purchasing life insurance now is key.

13th Annual Petschauer Insurance Team Building Outing

Petschauer Insurance recently completed yet another successful team-building experience at our 13th Annual Team Building Outing. We spent the day working on our professional development skills so that we always remain mindful and present when consulting and communicating with our loyal and valued clients. We did this all while having fun and learning to dance with Heather Berman at the Garden City Dance Studio! By supporting one another through the emotional intelligence process of turning our challenges into successes, these strategies enable us to continue being the best insurance professionals we can be for you! Keeping You Safe Through the Sunshine & Fun Summer Season

Family Dog Outdoors

After eagerly awaiting through the cold winter months, we’ve finally arrived at summertime! This is an opportunity to soak in the sun, go for a swim, grill up some burgers, and participate in a number of other fun outdoor activities.

Along with the incoming heat wave, however, comes a need for safety and increased awareness.  Taking cues from some of our carrier partners, we’d like to highlight ways to practice safety while still having fun this time of year.

BBQ

HOW TO BE SAFE WHEN MAKING a dynamite meal FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS: It’s important to check your propane tank for leaks before you begin. As you start cooking up that delicious food, make sure kids and pets are both far away from the grill.   Afterwards, be mindful to clean the grease/fat buildup off the grill and respective trays so that you are ready for your next fabulous meal!  For more suggestions, Travelers offers a full pre, during, and post grilling guide here.

Help your pets enjoy summer, too! Sometimes the blazing heat can just be too hot for us to bear on a summer day. There’s a good chance that our pets feel the same way. According to the ASPCA, it only takes ten minutes for the inside of a car to reach 102 degrees on an 85 degree day.  Please, do not even think about leaving pets in the car, even for a minute while you run into a store!  This can lead to hyperthermia or WORSE! There are ways to make your furry friends comfortable during the sunshine.  Here are a few: when traveling outdoors with your pet, carry large amounts of cold water, exercise during cool parts of the day, find shady areas or bring umbrellas, walk in the grass and be sure they always wear a life vest if they are near the water or on a boat.

Pool PartyMake a positive splash! It’s always an exciting time of year when opening the pool. If you have young kids around, there are ways to ensure a safe environment before you officially hit the water. It would be best to secure the perimeter with fencing, a gate, and/or locked entrance. You can also equip the pool area with life preserver rings and rope, as well as a reaching pole with a rescue hook. Trusted Choice provides more pool safety/maintenance tips here.

One small step for “man”, one giant leap for safety!  The warm weather allows us to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities we look forward to all year round. For some, that includes jumping on a trampoline, using fire pits and waterfalls. Coverage on your homeowner’s policy may vary depending on the carrier so call your agent today to be sure your guests are covered in the event of an unforeseen accident. There are carriers that provide coverage based on certain safety measures being met. For your convenience, Nationwide offers insight as to how you can forge ahead with caution.  In addition, Travelers has you covered as well!

We’re all excited for summer and we wish you a safe and fun time!  Enjoy the start of the season!

2015 Father’s Day Message From Our President

2015_06_16_09_45_20_001

My dad’s memory resonates in all that I do.  So when Father’s Day comes around, it is yet another day I remember and appreciate all the amazing influences he had on me, the lessons he taught me and all the love and support he gave to me.  And make no mistake, his spirit and presence is felt everyday as he guides me through my personal and professional life.  I feel very blessed.

Even through the transition of moving our office to Garden City, NY after 58 years in Ridgewood, NY he was still being a supportive mentor by sending me “signs” that would help prepare me and my team for the challenges and excitement of our new home.  Reflecting on his lessons, there is one that always inspires me every day: “Heidi you are only as successful as your team behind you.  Make a commitment to be there for them every day”.  Sharing this with you makes me smile and I so believe no truer words were ever spoken.

My hope for you today is to make happy memories while honoring that special man in your life.  And, if that special man is with you in spirit, as my dad is, celebrate their life and let those happy memories and lessons live on inside you forever.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Looking Back, Moving Forward: The Future of Petschauer Insurance

The Future of Petschauer InsuranceBlog 5

We have grown from a staff of 3 to 14 insurance professionals since first opening our business and now we have outgrown our space here in Ridgewood. With the goal of the Petschauer Legacy continuing, we needed to find a new home with more space.  Hence the move so we can grow.

Our new location: 377 Oak St., Suite 404, Garden City, NY 11530 offers so many opportunities:

  • It is centrally located
  • Has easy access for all of NYC, Queens, and Long Island residences
  • MORE PARKING! (Those that live in Queens can certainly relate to this challenge)
  • It affords us larger space to grow into
  • Professional office space with a collaborative team working environment
  • Continues our Investment and commitment to creating more career opportunities

We are invested in our professional staff development so we can produce professional consultants who work together with our clients to offer the best insurance options for their needs and budget.  Our new space will allow us to continue on this path of offering more professional staff development seminars.

Our founder, John Petschauer, always stated:  “You are only as successful as your staff behind you is competent.”  This is so true, and why Erwin and I are so invested and committed to this philosophy. We believe that encouraging our staff to take classes to grow their insurance knowledge will give them the opportunity to feel competent and confident. At Petschauer Insurance, one can be hired as a receptionist and through our professional development can grow into an Account Executive or Producer in any one of our 3 departments: Commercial, Personal or Life & Health.  We believe that by collaborating with educated insurance consultants we help our clients feel protected and set a foundation for our legacy to be here a very long time.

We will miss our original home in Ridgewood but we are committed to staying connected to the community of our founder’s heritage by continuing to participate in the Steuben Day Parade. And as a firm, we also support our staff’s investment in community service and give back to many local charities such as Toys for Tots, Avon Breast Cancer Walk, and Pets Alive.

Come visit us in Garden City!

Looking Back, Moving Forward: The Legacy Continues

THE PETSCHAUER LEGACY CONTINUES

BLOG #4

The value of family and community was so integral to my dad, John Petschauer – or JP as we lovingly called him – as a person and as a professional.  He looked to his family to continue to develop and perpetuate his business.  JP always embraced the concept of moving forward.  He knew when it was time to transition out and help my cousin, Erwin Petschauer, and I transition into our new leadership roles.  With his mentoring and guidance, we were able to have our own focus and he helped us to make our individual contributions to the business.

Since Erwin’s degree was in computer engineering, he took us to higher and higher levels of automation and efficiency over the years.  Today with Erwin’s risk management expertise, he now heads our New Business Development, which has been instrumental in the growth of our business.  Just like JP, Erwin loves networking with people and offering advice to business owners on how to protect their property and assets to keep their businesses viable and growing.  With my management degree, one of my main focuses is on professional staff development, which means hiring and developing a solid in-house team of knowledgeable insurance consultants who are committed and dedicated to customer service.

Together Erwin and I have reached out to local residences to fill many employment positions and our staff has grown from 3 to 14 as of today.  With my dad’s mentoring, Erwin and I partnered and brought our own experience and passion to help grow Petschauer Insurance into who and what we are today. JP may only be here in spirit today, but he is so alive in all of us here at Petschauer Insurance. Even the staff that never had the privilege of working with him can feel the energy of his legacy. I know my dad is so proud!

So what’s the reason for our move? Find out why “moving forward” is so important for the Petschauer Legacy  in our final Blog #5.

Looking Back, Moving Foward: In The Beginning

IN THE BEGINNING: THE HISTORY OF THE FOUNDERS OF PETSCHAUER INSURANCE

John Petschauer was born in Austria in 1933.  He loved farming, singing, dancing and sports, especially skiing and soccer.  When he was 16 years old John immigrated to Ridgewood, NY after WWII. During this very difficult time for the world; John knew that America would afford many more opportunities for him and his family.  The Petschauer Family brought with them a strong work ethic and a desire to be part of a community that shared the same work and family values.  Ridgewood was that place! It was filled with many immigrants from adjacent villages as well.  What John didn’t know then was that his future wife would be Ingrid Meditz.  Their families knew each other as they came from the same region in Austria! However, John and Ingrid met at the landmark, Gottscheer Hall, in Ridgewood, playing Ping-Pong and attending dances. John also joined a German singing choir, which practiced weekly at this landmark.  Music made him smile and he remained a member for over 30 years.  This landmark establishment has remained a loyal and valued client of Petschauer Insurance.

How did this young, strong immigrant with a dynamic and kind personality open an insurance agency?  Find out how it all started in next’s week blog #3.
