New York’s new Paid Family Leave (PFL) law will go into effect on January 1st, 2018. This is a mandatory benefit for all New York employees, and employers have the option to approach their employees to make early deductions. Beginning July 1st, 2017 employers can start making these deductions. In the interest of sharing more information, Petschauer Insurance would like to answer some pressing questions to help readers understand how this law impacts you.
What is PFL & who qualifies for this benefit?
PFL supplements part of an employee’s income while they are out of work. Full-time employees who have worked 26 consecutive weeks and part-timers who have worked a minimum of 175 days are all eligible.
When can you take PFL?
Paid Family Leave can be taken for newborn bonding and/or foster adoption (within one year of birth/placement), the caring of a seriously ill family member, or family exigency/military leave. The need for exigency leave will arise if a covered military family member is on covered activity duty or active duty status.
How much will PFL pay?
In 2018, employees will be eligible for 50% income replacement for a maximum of 8 weeks. An employee’s approved time off and income replacement percentage will continue to increase through 2020.
How much will PFL cost?
Employees fund PFL through payroll deductions. The premium or contribution will be equivalent to .126% of an employee’s weekly wage, capped at $1.65 per week for New York’s average wage of $1,305.92.
Will you have job protection?
All eligible employees have job protection while out on Paid Family Leave.

THE PETSCHAUER LEGACY CONTINUES
The value of family and community was so integral to my dad, John Petschauer – or JP as we lovingly called him – as a person and as a professional. He looked to his family to continue to develop and perpetuate his business. JP always embraced the concept of moving forward. He knew when it was time to transition out and help my cousin, Erwin Petschauer, and I transition into our new leadership roles. With his mentoring and guidance, we were able to have our own focus and he helped us to make our individual contributions to the business.
Since Erwin’s degree was in computer engineering, he took us to higher and higher levels of automation and efficiency over the years. Today with Erwin’s risk management expertise, he now heads our New Business Development, which has been instrumental in the growth of our business. Just like JP, Erwin loves networking with people and offering advice to business owners on how to protect their property and assets to keep their businesses viable and growing. With my management degree, one of my main focuses is on professional staff development, which means hiring and developing a solid in-house team of knowledgeable insurance consultants who are committed and dedicated to customer service.
Together Erwin and I have reached out to local residences to fill many employment positions and our staff has grown from 3 to 14 as of today. With my dad’s mentoring, Erwin and I partnered and brought our own experience and passion to help grow Petschauer Insurance into who and what we are today. JP may only be here in spirit today, but he is so alive in all of us here at Petschauer Insurance. Even the staff that never had the privilege of working with him can feel the energy of his legacy. I know my dad is so proud!
So what’s the reason for our move? Find out why “moving forward” is so important for the Petschauer Legacy in our final Blog #5.

HOW DID INSURANCE BECOME JOHN PETSCHAUER’S PASSION?
As a young man with the Korean War underway, John realized that joining the U.S. Air Force would be his best opportunity to see the world and learn. His travels took him all over the U.S. as well as Africa. He loved learning different languages, math and management skills. In the Air Force he was assigned the roll of accounting, overseeing the soldier’s benefits and managing the administrative staff. It was during this time he recognized his love for being with people, supporting and protecting them.
When John returned to Ridgewood after serving his country for 4 years, he met Mr. Durner, an insurance broker. Looking to retire, Mr. Durner saw John’s love of people and management skills and offered to mentor him. John saw many of his immigrant neighbors and friends learning and growing in a new country just like he was and saw an opportunity to provide them with insurance to protect their American Dream. As a professional insurance consultant, John protected their property and assets by providing them with the proper insurance for their needs and budget. John’s friends and family valued his insurance knowledge and professional services so much that they referred their friends and family to the Petschauer Insurance Agency. And so, the Petschauer Insurance legacy began.
John married an amazing woman, Ingrid, who not only emigrated from the same region in Austria but also upheld the same strong values as he did. Ingrid was very much ahead of her time and took on a leadership role beside John every step of the way. She worked in the family restaurant business at night with John while they were growing their insurance business. Attending many networking functions with him to enhance their referrals, they worked together to expand their business. Even while raising their 2 daughters, Ingrid remained an active partner at the Petschauer Insurance Agency. When their daughters were grown, Ingrid obtained her insurance license so she was able to help manage clients as well. Ingrid still continues to be an active partner in growing the Petschauer business today.
Insurance is in the Petschauer legacy. Find out more about what this means in next week’s blog.
