How Snowbirds Can Winterize Their Homes Before Going Away

Snow home

If you are a snowbird heading south for the winter, there are several key things you can do to help protect your vacant home. Taking these steps can help protect your home from theft, water damage, heating or electrical system malfunctions while you are away.

Make Your Home Appear as Though It Is Continuously Occupied

Forward your mail, stop newspaper delivery, and ask a friend or relative to collect flyers or other items that may be left at your door.

Take Steps to Protect Your Home from Thieves

Secure external doors and windows with deadbolt locks, security-type hinges and sturdy door frames that cannot be spread apart. Install slide locks or other equivalent security locks on doors.

Protect Your Pipes to Avoid Water Damage by Turning Off Your Water Supply

Drain your pipes of all water by opening the faucets, and flush your toilet to clear the water from the tank and bowl, then consider pouring antifreeze in toilet tanks and bowls to prevent any remaining water from freezing.

Keep Your Home and Plumbing Warm if Your Water Supply Stays On

Set the temperature at 55°F or higher to help keep the interior of the floor and wall cavities above freezing temperatures. Keeping room and cabinet doors open also helps heat to circulate and warm the areas where pipes are located.

Perform Routine Maintenance Before You Leave

If electrical service to the home is to remain on, consider having a licensed electrical contractor inspect your main electrical panel, wiring and outlets, if necessary.

Make Your Home Unattractive to Pests

Inspect your home for openings that animals could use to enter. For example, make sure your fireplace flue is closed, as bats, birds and squirrels are known to get inside this way.

Be Ready for Emergencies

Install smoke detectors on at least every floor (preferably tied to a constantly monitored fire alarm system so the fire department will automatically be notified in case of alarm), and confirm that the sensors and system are tested regularly.

A 2017 Thanksgiving Message From Our President Heidi Petschauer

Thanksgiving Table

During this special time of year where we pause to give thanks, I begin this message with a very heartfelt thank you to my dad, the founder of Petschauer Insurance, John Petschauer. He always provided me with an opportunity to learn the insurance business as well as understand the importance of collaborating with others.

Because of my dad’s imparting wisdom, as leader of the Petschauer Insurance Team, I always focus on promoting everyone working together.  Everyone on our team has incredible strengths which are all unique and appreciated. Therefore, pooling our strengths truly promotes our values of always relating with honesty and integrity, so that we can continue to build trusting relationships with you – our valued clients.

So now, my heartfelt thank you goes out to our amazing Petschauer Team! They are always open and committed, as I was, to seeking every opportunity to learn and grow so that they can continue to keep you, your families and your businesses protected and feeling safe. I am truly blessed to have them as my Team!

To you: our clients, I am so grateful and appreciate your continued trust in us and the values we uphold.

I wish everyone and their families a very blessed, safe and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. May you all take this time to reflect on the many blessings in your life.

The Thanksgiving holiday is an awesome opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends, enjoy great food, and create long-lasting memories! We want to ensure that you have the most enjoyable time you can. With that in mind, please allow us to share some great tips around safety and extracurricular activities to make this holiday a phenomenal one from start to finish!

Cooking Up A Great Meal: Preparing the turkey and all the tasty fixings is a big part of the Thanksgiving tradition. In an effort to help everything go smoothly, Travelers Insurance provides a fantastic guide of do’s and don’ts for cooking a successful meal, complete with smart cooking attire ideas and what to be mindful of in the kitchen. The company also provides reassurance by explaining what to do in the event of a fire.

Helping Your Pets Enjoy Thanksgiving: While you and your loved ones enjoy a great meal, your pets deserve to be treated to something good as well. Cooked turkey, sweet potato, and green beans will help them truly embrace the spirit of the holiday! However, as tasty as they may look, the ASPCA suggests that you keep the sweet treats away from your furry friends!

2017 Father’s Day Message From President Heidi Petschauer

Heidi JP_Page_1

As I reflect on my dad’s (our founder) life and legacy on this Father’s Day, there is a common theme that resonates how he lived his life at work and with family and friends. He valued working together as a team or family to achieve a common goal. I so value this as well. My dad instilled this in me and I continue to carry this theme throughout my own personal life and here at Petschauer Insurance. In our professional office environment, we now call this theme “JPI Team Collaboration.” I truly believe this theme encourages and allows every team member to feel that their contributions at JPI have value. My deep belief is that if everyone feels this sense of having value, we can increase our level of competency and confidence to be the best insurance consultants we can be – even in the presence of our challenges or obstacles.

Team collaboration also holds true when working together at home with your family and friends.  This value will allow you to be more open to sharing and communicating with those you love and hold dear. My dad was on to something here! The more successes you experience and the more value you feel, the more you will grow as a company and as a family. To me, that is what life and living is all about!

As you are being honored and celebrated by those that love and respect you this Father’s Day, my message is simple: whether you are a dad, mentor, coach, teacher or in any other position of influence, may you always maintain the value of team collaboration!

Today in particular, as I honor the memory and legacy of my dad, this value always lives in me.

Happy Father’s Day!

2017 Mother’s Day Message from Our President

IMG_7052

Mother’s Day is a day to reflect on the lives of the special women who have impacted your world like no one else.  They may be your mom, a relative, a friend, a neighbor, a doctor, a teacher.  She is any woman that has the gift to help you realize your potential and worth, help you through the tough days, share your joys on the awesome days, and simply help you love and be yourself.

On this Mother’s Day, I celebrate and honor the amazing woman in my life, my Mom.  Her soft voice and encouraging words help to always keep me grounded and focused during my busy days leading our Petschauer team.  She truly is like a mother to each of our team members in the office. During those care free days we spend together, she makes me laugh and helps me feel so loved and relaxed.  There are no words to express how grateful I feel for her constant love and support throughout my life.

I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day filled with love and laughter, as you are being celebrated and honored for all you do.

For those of you whose special women are no longer present, may the memories of their lives and love fill your hearts and your Mother’s Day with smiles and joy, as they are with you in spirit.

Happy Mother’s Day!

2017 New Year’s Message from Our President: Heidi Petschauer

new-years-2017

In 2016, we at Petschauer Insurance, focused on putting down our roots in our new home here in Garden City. Our goal was to enhance our client experience by promoting our brand of honesty and integrity so that we could continue building strong and trusting relationships.  It was also equally important for us to promote our brand within the Petschauer Team. Keeping You and Your Family Happy and Safe This Holiday Season

christmas-gifts

The holiday season is officially here! This is an opportunity to spend quality time with your family and reflect upon the past year’s blessings. As you look forward to laughing, singing, and having fun with your loved ones, allow us to help you prepare with some safety reminders to ensure this holiday season is a happy and healthy one.

Prepare your home for travel: Whether you are logging long hours shopping for gifts at the mall or making a trip to see an out of town family member, it’s important not to tip off thieves and suggest you aren’t home. Nationwide offers various suggestions as to how you can discourage in-home theft. This will help prevent you from giving a burglar easy access or a green light to come in.

Be smart when shopping for gifts: While we may be past the Black Friday and Cyber Monday crazes, the holiday shopping continues all month long. Think Glink discusses the importance of setting (and sticking to) a budget and taking advantage of free shipping offers from notable retailers. As stores get crowded, choosing to ship will keep you off the hectic roads and help you save money on gas.

Put a smile on their face with safety: In addition to being safe as the holidays near, exchanging gifts can present you and your loved ones with an opportunity to set the tone and practice safety all year round. AllState provides a comprehensive gift guide, complete with budgeted ideas for those who enjoy spending time at home, on the road, and outdoors.

Create a bright and starry display in a safe way: When getting into the holiday spirit, you may find fun in outdoing all your neighbors with a festive display outside or entertaining your family members inside. Either way, you can take precautions when putting up decorations. Travelers outlines potential solutions for you, including LED lights, battery operated candles, and more.

Wherever you go this holiday season, we also encourage you to be safe on the road. Happy Holidays!

Petschauer Insurance’s Guide To A Safe and Happy Halloween

family-pumpkins

Having spooky adventures is all part of the fun during Halloween. That said, the real scare would be not being careful on this frightful holiday. Allow us to walk you through some key safety tips to ensure a fun-filled holiday.

Halloween Parties: Gatherings can be exciting, and hosts will be worry free if they’ve reviewed their homeowners coverage before the fun begins. Taking up well known traditions can be done in a careful manner. When carving pumpkins, it’s important to keep carving tools away from young children. They can decorate with markers instead. You can supplement candles with energy efficient LED lights. The FDA recommends rinsing fruits and vegetables under cool running water before bobbing for apples. If you’re hosting a party and charge money for entry, Travelers notes that it could be considered a business opportunity and the proper insurance would come in handy.

Trick or treating: AllState recommends that children travel in groups, do so in brightly lit areas, and have a mutual place to gather should they end up getting separated. On the flip side, as a driver you’d be smart to keep an eye out for children running in the street, especially if it’s a darker area. As a parent, you can keep kids’ food allergies in mind and prepare them with a raised level of awareness around the risks of encountering strangers. On a day centered around snacks and sweets, Utica offers some healthier alternatives.

Decorations: The quickest and safest way to avoid injury for any visitors is to keep your front and back yards clean and to clear a path for trick-or-treaters. According to The Washington Post, Halloween is unfortunately a day with a higher risk/percentage of home burglaries and car vandalisms. Luckily, Nationwide offers a complete outline to keeping your home and car safe.

Costume Safety: Putting together costumes for your kids can be done in a safe manner as well. Face paint can be less restricting on a child’s eyesight than a fully covering mask. Costumes that don’t run very long will give trick-or-treaters the flexibility to walk freely without risk of tripping. The toy weapons from your child’s favorite superhero should not be able to cause legitimate harm. AllState points out that flame-resistant fabric is always best, especially if there’s still an easily accessible spot for children to keep their cell phones, in case of an emergency.

To get into the spirit of the holiday, you can also check out one of our favorite Ask Sherri videos. Happy Halloween!
